Back to School Essentials Checklist
- Lunch box and bento boxes: Bento boxes are a fantastic option as they have separate compartments for the food which means no food crossover and juices seeping together.
- Drink bottles: Some of these come with a built-in straw which is handy for drinking on the go. Perfect for a breakfast smoothie! The drink bottles that are double insulated are made of stainless steel which means they are incredibly durable and are suitable for hot and cold drinks.
- Reusable Ice Sticks: These are just like ice cubes however in the shape of sticks, so they fit easily into the drink bottle. These are perfect for making the drinks extra cold or could be a super slim option to a freezer brick in a lunch bag.
- Lunch Bags: Keep lunches at temperature for longer. These handy bags are insulated to reduce condensation and keep your food as fresh as when it was prepped.
- Muffin and cupcake trays: These can be used to make the obvious -cupcakes or muffins. However, these can also be used to make savoury muffins, mini quiches, spaghetti cups, and classic rice crackles.
- Cookie Cutters: Encourage your kids to eat their lunch by using cookie cutters to make fun shapes out of sandwiches, fruit, and veggies. You can also find specific sandwich cutters in shapes that include the middle cut.
- Spiraliser: Use this to make apple ribbons or potato twirls. Don’t forget to give them a bit of a fry so they are not only cooked but stay a little crunchy in the lunch box. For extra flavour season the apple ribbons with cinnamon sugar and powdered sugar and the potato twirls with salt and rosemary.
- Blender: Make breakfast to have on the go with a smoothie. Mix up the flavours from sweet berries to banana and peanut butter. Adding oats will help thicken these up and help keep the kids fuller for longer.
- Air fryer: Create lunchbox envy with yummy crispy lunches. Think of the previously mentioned apple ribbons, frittata, chicken wings, chickpea popcorn. Here are so many options!

There is no denying that you can always win friends over with food. Some of my favourite memories of school are of us sitting in a circle comparing our lunches, being envious of each other, and negotiating on swaps.
Understandably there are a lot more rules these days about what you can and can’t pack in a lunch but that doesn’t mean it has to be boring. And unlike my days, you can actually enjoy your lunch now as if it just came out of the fridge. And why should the kids have all the fun? Whatever you’re making for the kids, make sure you make a little something for yourself too. This is also much more efficient and time saving! Speaking of time – which none of us seem to have – invest in good quality equipment that results in being time and cost efficient.
