Who is Christie Williams?
An Australian illustrator and surface pattern designer from the Dandenong Ranges, Australia, Christie specialises in drawing colourful nature inspired designs, particularly of flowers and birds.
“Growing up on the Sunshine Coast, I was surrounded by nature, and influenced by the joy and inspiration it brings into our daily living. Our Australian landscape is my muse - from our vibrant, colourful flowers, to tropical plants and unique wildlife.”
With a portfolio of clients across the globe, Christie’s work mixes traditional drawing methods with digital techniques to create vibrant colour filled patterns.
What inspired the botanical direction for your illustrations?
“When I first started working on the collection, I knew I wanted to include a selection of my favourite Australian flowers. I wanted to be able to draw them while looking at the real flowers, so it then became a selection of what flowers were in bloom at the time in our garden that would work well together in terms of colours and shape, and then pairing them with other flowers that would bring in any extra pops of colour needed. I especially love waratahs and how unique they are. I have a lot of them growing at home and wanted to draw the young flowers as they have such an interesting shape. The rest of the flowers were chosen around the waratah. I thought about what might pair well with it, and the different textured flowers, foliage, and how it could all work together in the illustrations.”
How did you select the colour palette?
“I love working with lots of colour and wanted to mix the tones of the native flora used in the designs with pastels for a light and airy look that would still be vibrant for spring/summer. The orange/yellow blooms of the banksia flowers always pair so well with pink tones, and I love mixing shades of blue, pink, and green together when designing for the home. They seem to pair well and are such a sweet and cosy combination.”
What’s your favourite piece in the range and why?
“Oh, that’s a tough question to answer, I like so many! I use the water bottle, bento boxes, lunch bag, and parrot mug everyday so it must be one of those. I think maybe the smoothie cup. I just love how the design looks printed on the glass; the colours are so pretty. I keep 2 on my desk- one for drinking water, and one for storing pens and paintbrushes. Although I also really love the reusable totes, they are so handy!”
What makes the banksia collection so special?
“The designs bring a little bit of beauty to everyday life with the Australian flora illustrations and patterns on products that are useful in the home and at work. It’s nice to be surrounded by uplifting colours and reminders of nature.”
